  7. Conflict of interest policies in science and medical journals: Editorial practices and author disclosures.Sheldon Krimsky & L. S. Rothenberg - 2001 - Science and Engineering Ethics 7 (2):205-218.
This study examines the extent to which scientific and biomedical journals have adopted conflict of interest (COI) policies for authors, and whether the adoption and content of such policies leads to the publishing of authors’ financial interest disclosure statements by such journals. In particular, it reports the results of a survey of journal editors about their practices regarding COI disclosures. About 16 percent of 1396 highly ranked scientific and biomedical journals had COI policies in effect during 1997. Less than 1 (...)

    Financial interests of authors in scientific journals: A pilot study of 14 publications.Sheldon Krimsky, L. S. Rothenberg, P. Stott & G. Kyle - 1996 - Science and Engineering Ethics 2 (4):395-410.
Disclosure of financial interests in scientific research is the centerpiece of the new conflict of interest regulations issued by the U.S. Public Health Service and the National Science Foundation that became effective October 1, 1995. Several scientific journals have also established financial disclosure requirements for contributors. This paper measures the frequency of selected financial interests held among authors of certain types of scientific publications and assesses disclosure practices of authors. We examined 1105 university authors (first and last cited) from Massachusetts (...)

Long-Time Behavior of Macroscopic Quantum Systems: Commentary Accompanying the English Translation of John von Neumann’s 1929 Article on the Quantum Ergodic Theorem.Sheldon Goldstein, Roderich Tumulka, Joel L. Lebowitz & Nino Zangh`ı - unknown
The renewed interest in the foundations of quantum statistical mechanics in recent years has led us to study John von Neumann’s 1929 article on the quantum ergodic theorem. We have found this almost forgotten article, which until now has been available only in German, to be a treasure chest, and to be much misunderstood. In it, von Neumann studied the long-time behavior of macroscopic quantum systems. While one of the two theorems announced in his title, the one he calls the (...)

Exploring the Public Understanding of Basic Genetic Concepts.Sharon L. R. Kardia, Jane P. Sheldon, Elizabeth M. Petty, Merle Feldbaum, Elizabeth S. Anderson, Angela D. Lanie & Toby Epstein Jayaratne - unknown
It is predicted that the rapid acquisition of new genetic knowledge and related applications during the next decade will have significant implications for virtually all members of society. Currently, most people get exposed to information about genes and genetics only through stories publicized in the media. We sought to understand how individuals in the general population used and understood the concepts of ???genetics??? and ???genes.??? During in-depth one-on-one telephone interviews with adults in the United States, we asked questions exploring their (...)

This paper deals with what a government funded development agency should do when a developing country imposes restrictions on the development process which discriminate on the basis of gender against some members of the development agency’s staff. The conclusion is that there are circumstances in which development agencies should continue their work in the face of gender discrimination but they should not instigate development projects if doing so would involve them in gender discrimination. A set of procedures for a development (...)

Paradoxical reflection in quantum mechanics.Pedro L. Garrido, Sheldon Goldstein, Jani Lukkarinen & Roderich Tumulka - unknown
This article concerns a phenomenon of elementary quantum mechanics that is quite counter-intuitive, very non-classical, and apparently not widely known: a quantum particle can get reflected at a potential step downwards. In contrast, classical particles get reflected only at upward steps. As a consequence, a quantum particle can be trapped for a long time (though not forever) in a region surrounded by downward potential steps, that is, on a plateau. Said succinctly, a quantum particle tends not to fall off a (...)

Growing democratic citizenship competencies: Fostering social studies understandings through inquiry learning in the preschool garden.Erin M. Casey, Cynthia F. DiCarlo & Kerry L. Sheldon - 2019 - Journal of Social Studies Research 43 (4):361-373.
Essential skills and attitudes necessary for active citizenship need to be cultivated as early as prekindergarten. This exploratory study investigated if three and four-year olds could be actively engaged in social studies practices through inquiry learning in a school garden. Eleven children openly interacted and conducted personally-driven investigations on a daily basis in the school garden located on their playground over nine-months. Three interviews with children, teacher observation notes, and lesson plans were analyzed to discover whether NCSS preK-12 learning themes (...)

Large deviations for a point process of bounded variability.Sheldon Goldstein - manuscript
We consider a one-dimensional translation invariant point process of density one with uniformly bounded variance of the number NI of particles in any interval I. Despite this suppression of fluctuations we obtain a large deviation principle with rate function F(ρ) −L−1 log Prob(ρ) for observing a macroscopic density profile ρ(x), x ∈ [0, 1], corresponding to the coarse-grained and rescaled density of the points of the original process in an interval of length L in the limit L → ∞. F(ρ) (...)
